The golf ball is, of course, an indispensable element of the golf game, so it is important to understand the different types of balls and their characteristics in order to be able to choose the right one for your playing style. In this blog we will explore some of the most common types of golf balls, why they are different, what is hidden inside golf balls and other interesting facts about them.

Interesting facts about golf balls

Inside each golf ball is a complex system of internal holes and materials that affect its characteristics and performance. Most modern golf balls have a core made of rubber or synthetic material, which is surrounded by a layer of material such as surlyn or urethane. Different brands of golf balls have different technologies and innovations that help them fly further and achieve more control and grip. Also, golf balls often have unique patterns or colors so that players can easily identify them on the course.

There are three materials from which golf balls are made, namely: rubber, ionomer, urethane, and the type of ball is also classified by the number of layers of these materials.

Thus, there are types of balls by construction: single-layer, two-layer, three-layer, four-layer and five-layer balls.

One-layer Golf Balls

They are the least used in golf and are made of only one layer of material. They are durable but have a heavy feel and very little spin.

Two-layer Golf Balls

They are made of two layers of material – solid rubber in the center that is wrapped in urethane. They are an ideal choice for beginners and players with a slower swing. These balls are designed to fly flatter and spin less than multi-layered balls.

Three-layer Golf Balls

They are made of three layers of material. Serious golfers will reach for them because they offer a great combination of distance and feel. The soft shell improves the feel, the hard inner shell improves energy transfer to the core, and the core itself improves ball flight distance. Multi-layered urethane-covered balls are softer than double-layered balls and can spin more with bunker shots and chipping.

Four-layer Golf Balls

Although very similar to three-layer balls, four-layer balls are specific in that the additional layers are only activated when the player achieves a high enough swing speed. The soft material, urethane, provides enough spin, while the middle layer(s) between the core and the outer shell allow for more control over shots.

Five-layer Golf Balls

The science behind the five-layer golf ball is almost the same as that behind the four-layered. Super soft urethane layer ensures ball spin and accuracy on short shots. A five-piece ball typically has three layers, sandwiched between a fast core and a soft urethane cover. Each layer between the cover and the core will react to different shots and swing speeds in an effort to achieve the most optimal performance possible.

In addition to the classification by layers, we can also classify balls according to spin, so we have those with little spin, balls classified as those with medium spin, and high spin balls.

Driving range balls

When practicing on our driving range, we use so-called “driving range” balls, special balls designed for practicing on the driving range. They fly 6 to 10% less than classic balls and are slightly heavier.

On our driving range, we use two-layered driving range balls, which are a little harder, more durable and fly a little shorter.

Driving range balls are not allowed to be played with on the golf course, so they are made exclusively for driving range. Also, they are always specially marked.

If you come to the golf course with driving range balls, the least you can expect is to be thrown out of the golf course.

Choosing the right ball to suit your playing style and needs can improve distance as well as accuracy and control. Deciding on the type of ball also depends on the playing conditions and your personal style.
